Does dew affect the scoring pattern of teams in IPL? an enquiry using 2 - stage least square (2-SLS) method

Twenty-20 cricket has evolved with the growing prominence of franchise leagues like the Indian Premier League (IPL). The IPL, known for its commercial success and global appeal, is significantly influenced by weather conditions, particularly dew, which impacts match outcomes by favoring the batting side in the second innings. This study examines the effect of dew on scoring patterns in IPL matches, addressing the gap in cricket literature regarding weather-related performance impacts. The current study uses a 2-Stage Least Square (2-SLS) technique, as dew is an endogenous variable confirmed by the Durbin-Wu-Hausman test, to assess the impact of dew in the scoring pattern of teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL), taking data from the seasons 2023 and 2024. The validity of the instruments is supported by first-stage regression and the Sargen test. The second stage regression takes fitted values of dew as the independent variable and runs scoring pattern as the dependent variable. The result indicates that dew positively and significantly impacts run scoring. Specifically, for every unit increase in dew, the batting team in the second innings is expected to score more runs than the usual. The article may help team management to facilitate several decisions, related to toss, selection of players.
