Barriers to adoption of reusable packaging from supply chain perspective: multi criteria decision making analysis and industry 4.0 strategies

Reusable packaging is gaining momentum however, various barriers hinder the adoption. This article explores total 32 barriers to adoption of reusable packaging through literature survey and then focuses on 11 most significant barriers based on opinions of industry experts from SC perspective. Addressing all the barriers simultaneously becomes difficult to most of the industries, hence all the 11 barriers are prioritized and ranked using FTOPSIS (Fuzzy Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) from SC perspective based on opinions of 3 experts from an FMCG (fast moving consumer goods) manufacturing industry. The ‘concern about product safety (B5)’ is ranked as the most importance barrier while ‘lack of regulatory norms supporting reusable packaging (B8)’, ‘difficulty in managing package shelf life and biodegradation (B6)’ and ‘need for re-organization of supply chains (B2)’ are ranked to be the significant barriers from SC perspective. The Sensitivity analysis carried confirms robustness of the factors in response to the change in criteria weights. Further, barrier specific 5W2H analysis is done to diagnose each of the barriers and Industry 4.0 technologies are recommended to enhance adoption of reusable packaging helping to minimize the cost per reuse and make SCs sustainable. This will aid SC practitioners in benchmarking the readiness for adoption of reusable packaging. The holistic approach towards barriers to adoption of reusable packaging from SC perspective is an unprecedented contribution to the research domain.
