Underwater channel performance for optical LOS link under various aquatic environments

This paper presents an in-depth performance analysis of an underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) link using an SCM-PDM dual multiplexed configuration, focusing on the potential to provide high data rate transmission in aquatic environments. With the growing need for efficient underwater communication systems for various applications like; oceanographic data collection, environmental monitoring, and defence operations, UOWC is considered a feasible alternative to traditional acoustic and radio frequency based transmission. This work examines the effects of various underwater parameters such as absorption and scattering on optical link performance. The analysis investigates the impact of various multiplexed configurations as well as different water types on UOWC link performance. Compared to pure sea conditions, the BER increases by 19.1%, 27.3%, 52% and 64% for clear ocean, coastal ocean, harbor-I and harbor-II, for a UOWC link range of 12 m. Results indicate that the use of blue-green wavelengths, particularly in clear ocean waters, optimizes the communication range and bit error rate (BER) performance, making UOWC an attractive option for short to medium range underwater applications.
