Emerging trends in photonic crystal on-chip sensors for biomedical applications: a review

Photonic crystal sensors have gained prominence in biomedical and environmental fields due to their capability to control light propagation, enabling highly sensitive detection. Their adaptable nanostructures enable precise amplitude measurements, making them particularly effective for biomedical sensing and diagnostics. Advances in photonic crystal technology have led to enhanced sensor performance through optimized structural designs and numerical modelling techniques. This paper reviews recent developments in photonic crystal-based sensors, with a focus on biomedical applications, discussing key evaluation parameters, computational methods, and sensor optimization strategies. A comparative analysis of various photonic crystal based biomedical sensors highlights their structural variations and performance characteristics, providing insights into their potential for next generation sensing technologies.
