Remembering Professor Manoranjan De
摘要
Rightly called as the ‘Father of Modern Optics in India’, Professor Manoranjan De breathed his last on April 13, 2011 in Delhi, due to old age-related problems. He is survived by his son Ananda Mohan; Mrs. Amita De (wife of Prof. De) having predeceased him in 1983. In his death, we lost a doyen of optics whose scientific life spanned nearly five decades, and who through his mentorship, inspired three generations of students and researchers. Prof. De did much to enhance the visibility of optics through his personal efforts and contacts, and his way of life exemplified ‘plain living and high thinking’. The present article gives a brief account of his personal life, achievements in research and teaching, assignments abroad, formation of the Optical Society of India and its leadership, and consultancy to industries. The article is based on a plenary address given by the author at the inaugural session of an international conference held on Nov. 24–25, 2023 at the Calcutta University to celebrate the birth centenary Prof. M. De.
