Performance comparison of pre, post, and symmetrical dispersion compensation in SMF using DCF technique for different transmission distances

This study investigates the effectiveness of Dispersion Compensation Fiber (DCF) for mitigating chromatic dispersion in optical communication systems, comparing pre-DCF, post-DCF, and symmetrical-DCF models. By simulating transmission over Single Mode Fiber (SMF) at lengths of 144 km, 288 km, 432 km, and 576 km, the study evaluates each DCF model’s performance based on key metrics: Q-factor, Bit Error Rate (BER), and eye diagrams. Results reveal that symmetrical-DCF generally offers better performance at distances simulated than the pre- and post-DCF configurations unless in some interval power the pre-DCF and post-DCF have introduced better performance than symmetrical-DCF. This research underscores the adaptability of DCF in optimizing signal integrity and extending transmission distances in high-speed optical communication.
