Advancing PON performance via multi-core multi-mode fiber

Ensuring minimal total link loss is imperative for accessing passive optical networks. A pressing challenge involves diminishing uplink and downlink losses to bolster the power budget of the communication link. In these kinds of networks, multicore multimode fiber (MC-MMF) is used to diminish link losses without requiring many feeder fibers. The proposed scheme effectively uses space division multiplexing to lessen uplink and downlink communication losses by removing the requirement for multiple feeder fibers. The outcomes of the simulation show that all 18 MC-MMF modes may transmit data uplink and downlink without any errors. As a result, MC-MMF in bidirectional transmission shows remarkable overall link loss reduction, about 23.97dB less in downlink and 18.37dB less in uplink as compared to SSMF in optical access networks, with tolerable inter-core crosstalk levels.
