Facilitative Pollinator Interactions in Solanum melongena: Buzz Pollinators Increase Honeybee Foraging time

Buzz pollination is essential for pollen release from poricidal flowers of Solanaceae, yet non-buzzing honeybees are also frequent visitors. This study examined whether buzz-pollinating bees facilitate honeybee foraging in solanaceous crop brinjal (Solanum melongena). Field surveys across 33 brinjal fields in Balasore, Odisha documented 1972 bee visits from 16 species, with buzz pollinators comprising 82% of total visits. Xylocopa tenuiscapa and Nomia spp. were the primary buzz pollinators, while Apis cerana was the most frequent non-buzz visitor. Controlled experiments with virgin flowers showed that Apis cerana visitation duration increased 3.7-fold following Xylocopa tenuiscapa visits and 2.2-fold after Nomia spp. visits compared to new virgin flowers. Generalized linear mixed models confirmed these differences (p < 0.001). Further, visitation duration of Apis cerana increased 1.8 times per additional buzz by Xylocopa tenuiscapa and 1.03 times per buzz by Nomia spp. These results reveal a facilitative interaction where buzz pollinators enhance honeybee foraging, with effects varying by species.
