New Records of Edible Insects Used as Traditional Food Among the Adi Tribe in Arunachal Pradesh, India

The Adi Tribe has long practiced entomophagy, which is an integral part of their traditional way of life. From June 2022 to August 2023, a survey was carried out to provide an updated inventory of edible insect species that the Adi tribes of Arunachal Pradesh’s Upper Siang District found consuming. Forty-four edible insect species from 10 orders and 23 families were identified as new records in addition to previous records of edible insect species in the course of this investigation. The preferred edible insect groups belong to orthopteran and hymenopteran species, whereas the least number of insects consumed are dipteran and megalopteran species. In addition to eating insects, Adi tribal members have close ties to the insects in society’s traditions and practices.
