<p>Historically, poverty has been a&#xa0;central reference point for the development of the social work profession and local welfare structures. At the same time, research from various fields indicates that social work professionals no longer consistently address poverty as a&#xa0;problem for which they can claim a&#xa0;mandate or expertise. The possibilities and instruments of municipal poverty policies have also gradually been replaced by activation programs in recent decades. At present, however, alongside continuities, revitalization initiatives can be seen in the scientific and practical treatment of poverty, which are also reflected in the (re)establishment of municipal alliances against poverty. This article discusses the opportunities and obstacles in claiming municipal responsibilities for counteracting the causes of poverty and presents findings from an exploratory analysis of the self-perceptions of municipal alliances against poverty.</p>
