<p>Queerness is a&#xa0;lived reality experienced and shaped by young people. The current conditions of queer visibility are characterised by ambivalences of becoming visible: they promise recognition and at the same time threaten with violence. They demand an active strategy of coming out and lead to new meanings of ‘queer’ as an explicit self-designation. In this article, we outline the life situation of young queer people and the expectations placed on them to show themselves publicly, confidently, proudly and authentically as queer. Their framing of ‘queer’ as an identity encompasses two parallel interpretations: heterogeneous inclusive alliances and disruptive criticism. A&#xa0;meaningfully queer reality is thus currently characterised by permanent struggles that enable and compel young people to become political actors.</p>
