Exploring the potential of medicinal plants and herbal combinations for supplementation of vitamin D deficiency: a critical review
摘要
Vitamin D is a vital fat-soluble vitamin that the body needs for several physiological processes. Numerous health problems, including type 2 diabetes, obesity, polycystic ovarian syndrome, different types of cancer (such as breast cancer, ovarian cancer, prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, etc.), infertility, kidney problems, bone disorders, autoimmune diseases, and even mental health conditions like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, have been related to its deficiency. Although vitamin D can be obtained through sunlight exposure and dietary sources, supplements are often required, particularly in individuals with limited sun exposure or dietary restrictions. The use of medicinal plants and herbal combinations as a potential strategy to address vitamin D deficiency globally is examined in this review article. The article details the processes of vitamin D synthesis and its multiple functions in the body. It also looks at the possibility of different combinations of medicinal plants and herbal combinations conventionally used to raise vitamin D levels and improve its absorption in the body. We discuss several mechanisms of action, safety, and efficacy of various herbal preparations, including Ayurvedic, Chinese, and Mediterranean preparations, to improve vitamin D levels and their absorption, supported by a comprehensive review of relevant published scientific investigations.
