摘要

Sustainable agricultural production is critical for ensuring food security, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where agriculture remains a key pillar of the economy. Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Indicator 2.4.1 measures agricultural sustainability and monitors the progress towards more sustainable agricultural practices. It has the important objective to support the development and implementation of data-driven and evidence-based agricultural policies. However, for SSA, there is a paucity of data for SDG Indicator 2.4.1 and its proxy. While various factors contributing to the data scarcity, one crucial issue remains largely overlooked: the weak data acquisition capacity of SSA. Another reason is the low representation of SSA in the development of SDG Indicator 2.4.1 and its proxy. These call for better representation of SSA in future development of SDG Indicator 2.4.1, and enhanced capacity development efforts. Greater sensitivity to the agricultural traditions and practices of SSA, such as a generally low technical efficiency and the wide-existence of traditional farming practices, are particularly important.
