Influence of environmental change after the 2011 tsunami and subsequent restoration work on the larval and juvenile fish population of three species of amphidromous gobies (Gymnogobius opperiens, G. petschiliensis and G. urotaenia)

We conducted a population survey to elucidate the population dynamics of three amphidromous fish species, Gymnogobius opperiens, G. petschiliensis and G. urotaenia, in the surf zone of southern Iwate Prefecture, and to assess the effects of environmental changes caused by the 2011 tsunami and subsequent restoration work. Comparison of the number of individuals of the three species before and after the 2011 tsunami showed marked variations in the number of larvae and juveniles on Urahama Beach where the beach repeatedly disappeared and reformed. Model analysis indicated that the number of larvae and juveniles changed due to the combined effects of river water temperature during the spawning season (ΔDeviance explained: 5.51–20.96%), salinity (ΔDeviance explained: 7.05–10.92%), and environmental changes in the spawning area caused by the restoration work (ΔDeviance explained: 3.62–18.10%). Furthermore, significant environmental changes in the downstream riverbed led to buried or destroyed spawning areas, resulting in no increase in the population of G. urotaenia, which is abundant in the downstream area. These results suggest that the effects of the tsunami and subsequent environmental changes influenced the congeneric species differently due to variations in their ecological characteristics.
