<p>The blue swimming crab (<i>Portunus pelagicus</i>) constitutes a vital component of Thailand’s small-scale fisheries, particularly in Ao Por, Phuket Island, where bottom-set gillnets are widely used by small-scale fishers. Despite its ecological and economic significance, little is known about the operational dynamics and biological characteristics of this traditional fishery. This study provides a short-term, multi-dimensional assessment of the <i>P. pelagicus</i> fishery based on onboard observations and biometric data collected over 68 fishing trips conducted during the 2024 fishing season (June to September). We identified spatially consistent deployment zones around Naka Yai Island, with bottom-set gillnets typically set in parallel to the shoreline along a north–south axis. Monthly variations in fishing trips and catch amount were evident, with the highest number of trips and landings recorded in July and August. Mean (± standard deviation) catch per unit effort (CPUE) declined progressively from 0.64 ± 0.15&#xa0;kg/panel in June to 0.39 ± 0.17&#xa0;kg/panel in September. Biometric analysis of 1824 crabs (1156 males, 668 females) revealed sex-specific growth patterns, with males exhibiting positive allometry (<i>b</i> = 3.210 ± 0.0337, <i>p</i> &lt; 0.001), and females following an isometric growth pattern (<i>b</i> = 3.064 ± 0.0439, <i>p</i> = 0.1473). The observed sex ratio (female: male, 0.58:1.00) deviated significantly from parity (<i>χ</i><sup>2</sup> = 130.56, <i>p</i> &lt; 0.01), with male dominance persisting throughout the study. These findings offer the first empirical baseline for characterizing the fishing grounds, operational routines, and population characteristics of <i>P. pelagicus</i> exploited by small-scale fishers in Ao Por. The present research integrates fishery-dependent data with biological understanding to strengthen monitoring efforts and contribute to the broader goals of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14, Target 14.b regarding small-scale fisheries. Moreover, the findings offer a practical reference for informing future co-management approaches between local fishing communities and regulatory authorities, contributing to inclusive and sustainable fisheries governance.</p>
