<p>The Rhinoceros Auklet <i>Cerorhinca monocerata</i> is a piscivorous diving seabird that feeds on forage fish, which it also brings back in the bills to feed chicks. We sampled the bill-loads at five breeding colonies around Hokkaido, northern Japan between 2014 and 2024. Before 2019/2020, the auklets fed on the typically cold oceanographic regime species: age-0 greenling <i>Pleurogrammus azonus</i>/sand lance <i>Ammodytes</i> spp. and age-0 pollock <i>Gadus chalcogrammus</i> in the northern and the southern Sea of Japan of Hokkaido, respectively, and age-0 salmon <i>Onchorhynchus</i> spp. /sardine <i>Sardinops melanostictus</i> in the Pacific. They thereafter switched the diet to the warm-regime anchovy <i>Engraulis japonica</i> (&gt; 70% in mass) in the Sea of Japan, but they did not in the Pacific. This indicates high availability of anchovy for the auklets in the Sea of Japan during 2021–2024, though an increase of the biomass and the landings of anchovy Tsushima Warm Current stock has not been reported before 2022. This study highlights the potential of the diet of piscivorous seabirds as an immediate indicator of the change of local epipelagic forage fish communities.</p>
