Proposal of discrimination criteria using acoustic observation data of Japanese sand lance Ammodytes personatus in Sendai Bay

Ammodytes personatus is an important fishery resource in Japan, and its use differs between the fish size. Although this species has been mainly studied with quantitative echo sounders, the acoustic criteria for discriminating between small and large fish, which are separated by a fish size of 10 cm, have not been fully elucidated. In this study, the difference between the backscattering strength (ΔMVBS) at 120 kHz and 38 kHz was used to develop a criterion for discriminating between small and large fish on the basis of echo data alone. The results for ΔMVBS were bimodal, and discriminant analysis using the K-means method showed that the discriminant criterion was in the range of ΔMVBS 6.05–6.97, with 86.4% of correct responses for small size and 94.5% for large size. The relationship between body length and ΔMVBS showed that ΔMVBS was almost constant when body length exceeded 10 cm, indicating that ΔMVBS was strongly influenced by body length. The results of this study will make it possible to monitor the abundance and distribution of Japanese sand lance in real time, separating them into small and large groups.
