Purpose <p>Artificial intelligence and machine learning have been introduced in the medical field for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Publications of their applications in gastroenterology, especially in endoscopy, have increased in recent years. This article aims to predict the future trend of publications of artificial intelligence and machine learning in gastrointestinal endoscopy and implications for endoscopists and patients’ society, and discuss the advantages and limitations of these technological innovations.</p> Methods <p>A search was conducted on the Scopus and PubMed databases using the keywords “artificial intelligence”, “machine learning”, and “endoscopy” between the years 2013 and 2023. Afterwards, a detailed control of the results they were introduced in a S-curve to predict the future trend of these technological innovations in gastrointestinal endoscopy.</p> Results <p>The logistic regression showed that after the middle of the year 2020 artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms will be introduced in the everyday clinical practice of endoscopists, and in 2028, the publications about these technologies in gastrointestinal endoscopy will be saturated.</p> Conclusion <p>Our prediction based on the evolution of scientific publications highlights both the need for endoscopists to familiarize themselves with these innovative technologies and for medical universities, endoscopic societies, and governments to take action towards that direction.</p>

Forecast trend of artificial intelligence and machine learning technology: prospects and implications in the field of gastrointestinal endoscopy

Purpose

Artificial intelligence and machine learning have been introduced in the medical field for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Publications of their applications in gastroenterology, especially in endoscopy, have increased in recent years. This article aims to predict the future trend of publications of artificial intelligence and machine learning in gastrointestinal endoscopy and implications for endoscopists and patients’ society, and discuss the advantages and limitations of these technological innovations.

Methods

A search was conducted on the Scopus and PubMed databases using the keywords “artificial intelligence”, “machine learning”, and “endoscopy” between the years 2013 and 2023. Afterwards, a detailed control of the results they were introduced in a S-curve to predict the future trend of these technological innovations in gastrointestinal endoscopy.

Results
