Purpose <p>Artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning has recently been incorporated into the rapidly evolving healthcare technologies. AI can be used to improve some of the healthcare challenges facing the Low and Medium Income Countries (LMICs) with fragile healthcare systems.</p> Methods <p>We searched electronic databases in the public domain using the keywords “AI”, “digital health”, “public health”, and “LMICs” for articles published in English in peer-reviewed ISI-indexed journals from 2020 to 2024 to investigate the applications of AI in healthcare, and preventative medicine in LMICs.</p> Results <p>Only 2% of the published articles discussed AI application to healthcare in LMICs, as opposed to 43% globally. The private sector operating as Non-profit organisations besides World Health Organisation (WHO) seem to the major players in healthcare delivery in LMICs. AI algorithms used in industrialized countries can successfully be implemented in LIMCs through appropriate technology transfer via well trained Community Health Promoters (CHP) with indigenous knowledge. This can enhance patient empowerment, improve preventative medicine awareness, and increase disease sentinel surveillance capacity, hence reduce the emergence of pandemics, and also mitigate hospital congestion. Locally generated data can be used to train AI algorithms in LMICs in home-based care.</p> Conclusion <p>AI can be applied to pharmacotherapy and preventative medicine to mitigate healthcare delivery shortcomings in LMICs and the outbreak of global pandemics.</p>

Purpose
