Palaeoenvironmental and depositional studies of the Late Cretaceous Ifon-Uzzeba Shale deposits of the western flank of the Anambra Basin, Nigeria

The western flank of the Anambra Basin, Nigeria was analysed for its palynomorphs to decipher the palaeodepositional environment and the depositional age of the Basin. Traditional acid palynological method of sample administration was employed to extract the palynomorphs from the six shale samples recovered across two different locations of Obi and Oshodi camp, along Ifon-Uzzeba highway followed by the interpretation of palaeodepositional environments and possible age of lithological succession. The samples yielded 51 palynomorph species which occurred in varying degrees of abundance throughout the studied section. The palynomorphs identified were dominated by land derived species such as Cingulatisporites ornatus, Constructipollenites ineffectus, Cyathidites minor, Echitriporites trianguliformis, Longapertites sp., Monocolpites marginatus, Proxapertites cursus Retidiporites magdalenensis and Tricolporopollenites sp. Few fungal spores, diatom frustules and rare dinoflagellate cysts such as Operculodinium centrocarpum and Spiniferites sp. were also identified. Based on the palynoflora assemblage and marker species identified in the samples, a new assemblage affinity was identified as Longapertites sp.-Monocolpites marginatus palynological assemblage for the studied section. This correlates with the Longapertites sp. 3 - Spinizonocolpites echinatus palynozone of Lawal and Moullade (1986) classification. Therefore, Late Cretaceous (Campanian–Maastrichtian) age is interpreted for the studied interval in the western flank of Anambra Basin. Furthermore, presence of rare dinoflagellate including Ceratiopsis sp., Operculodinium centrocarpum, Paleocystodinium sp., and Spiniferites sp. together with land derived sporomorphs indicate a predominantly terrestrial palaeodepositional environment with intervals of near-shore environmental influence.
