New bovid fossils from the Dhok Pathan, Middle Siwalik subgroup of Pakistan
摘要
The Mio-Pliocene bovids, including Selenoportax vexillarius, Tragoportax punjabicus, and Pachyportax latidens, were recovered from the Middle Siwalik Subgroup of Pakistan. The studied material includes thirteen newly collected specimens, comprising premolars, molars, mandibular and maxillary remnants. The bovid material for this study was collected from the three sites near Dhok Pathan type locality, Talagang, Punjab, Pakistan. The age of these sites is from 10.2 to 3.4 Ma. Selenoportax vexillarius consists of hypsodont dentition with completely developed median ribs. The upper cheek teeth are quadrate and have divergent styles. The entostyle is completely developed, and the crown is broader at the apices but narrows at the base. Tragoportax punjabicus is a medium-sized bovid with moderately hypsodont upper molars, less prominent styles, a strong anterior median rib, and a weak posterior median rib. In Pachyportax latidens, the enamel border of upper molars is moderately thick, the basal median pillar is transversely expanded, and styles are comparatively long and quadrate compared to the other genera. The detailed description of these materials has enriched our knowledge of the anatomical and morphometric features of the extinct bovids. The Middle Siwalik Subgroup shows a more derived endemic species of Bovidae.
