Euphausiid species spatial distribution in the Namuncurá-Burdwood Bank Marine-protected area: impacts of oceanographic variability in autumn

Euphausiids are ecologically important marine holoplanktonic crustaceans that inhabit a range of habitats across all oceans, from the coastal to the bathypelagic zones. They are among the most abundant zooplankters in productive ecosystems. The present study examined their abundances in the Marine Protected Area Namuncurá-Burdwood Bank (MPAN-BB) during two autumn surveys. In 2016, a stronger Antarctic Circumpolar Current branch in the vicinity of Burdwood Bank resulted in upwelling and an increase in phytoplankton levels. In contrast, the 2017 survey revealed weaker currents, warmer waters and lower phytoplankton biomass. However, euphausiid densities were observed to be equivalent to those duplicated that of the previous year, and there was a positive correlation between their density and chlorophyll-a concentration. This suggests that food availability may be an important driver. Six species were found: Thysanoessa gregaria, Thysanoessa macrura, Euphausia vallentini, Euphausia lucens, Euphausia triacantha and Stylocheiron maximum. This study reveals significant spatial and dominance variations between autumns, with T. gregaria consistently dominating in both years, showing an increased dominance in 2017, which aligns with its adaptability to environmental changes. Fluctuations in species richness were indicated by changes in the Shannon diversity index. These findings highlight the critical role of euphausiids in trophic networks and the necessity for sustained monitoring of MPAN-BB in the context of climate change.
