First data on Caprellidae (Amphipoda: Senticaudata) from the bathyal zone of the Emperor Seamount Chain

Seamounts are known as hotspots of biodiversity and productivity that influence the entire ecosystem of the World Ocean and act as drivers of speciation for both abyssal and bathyal fauna. At the same time, they remain one of the least studied biotopes in the world due to their difficult accessibility for research. One of the most successful taxonomic groups for addressing biogeographic, ecological, and evolutionary questions on seamount fauna, as well as for biological monitoring of these ecosystems, is the climbing epibiotic crustacean family Caprellidae, since they can be successfully sampled using different gears, including ROVs. During the expedition to the Emperor Seamount Chain in the North Pacific organized by the A.V. Zhirmunsky National Scientific Center of Marine Biology (NSCMB) FEB RAS in 2021, a new caprellid species Caprella montana sp. nov. was discovered at the top of the Koko Guyot at a depth of 375 m, on the hydroid fouling of gorgonian corals (Octocorallia). This is the first conditional endemic caprellid species described from the Hawaiian–Emperor Seamount Chain and the first finding of the family in the bathyal zone of this area. The new species is most similar to the two bathyal species C. fimbrillata Vassilenko, 1993 and C. hakuhoae Takeuchi, Kihara and Matsumoto, 2019 from the Northwest Pacific, but differs from them by a significantly smaller size and a straight palmar edge of the pereopod 5–7 propodi, which lacks a proximal projection and grasping spines. The modifications of the grasping limbs are probably adaptations for life in the gorgonian community, which, together with adaptations to bathyal depth and isolation by distance, led to speciation.
