<p>The genus <i>Aurelia</i> (Phylum Cnidaria, Class Scyphozoa) is characterized by a convoluted taxonomic history due to the presence of cryptic species and high morphological plasticity. We describe a new species of <i>Aurelia</i> (Cnidaria, Scyphozoa) collected from offshore Gulf of Mexico. Two adult specimens, including one carrying planulae, were collected in July 2017, approximately 80 miles offshore in the Northern Central Gulf of Mexico. Molecular analysis showed its specific distinction from other <i>Aurelia</i> species. Polyps were obtained from planulae, and a culture of this species was established in the laboratory. Asexual reproduction, such as budding, was observed. Strobilation was induced, and ephyrae were morphologically analyzed and reared under laboratory conditions. We report relevant morphological characters of the polyp, ephyra, and medusa, compare them to those of other <i>Aurelia</i> species, and confirm the uniqueness of <i>Aurelia profunda</i>.</p>
