<p>Gobiidae (Teleostei: Gobiiformes) is one of the largest fish families within the teleosts, with a worldwide distribution inhabiting fresh, brackish, and marine waters. The gobiid fishes of the western Indian Ocean remain insufficiently studied, with many species either misidentified or their diversity underestimated. Available data are limited to only a few species, primarily due to their low economic value, small size, cryptic appearance, incomplete geographic sampling, and occurrence in hard-to-sample habitats. The Indo-Pacific tropical sand goby, <i>Favonigobius reichei</i>, belongs to the Gobiopsis lineage within the subfamily Gobiinae and is distributed across the Indo-West Pacific. Here, we report the presence of this cryptic species in the coastal waters of Qeshm Island, marking the first record for the Persian Gulf. We also provide a detailed morphological description, along with a COI-based phylogenetic and phylogeographic analysis of the newly collected samples.</p>
