Determining the Groundwater Availability Within the Framework of Potential Zones Using Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process for Damoh District

Damoh is a part of the water scare Bundelkhand region. Due to its high elevation and limited surface water, groundwater serves as the primary source of freshwater. Since 90% of the water demand is fulfilled by the groundwater, a proper groundwater management plan based on scientific studies is needed for sustainable development. A standardized approach of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) integrating with Fuzzy and GIS methodology has been used to delineate Ground Water Potential Zones (GWPZ's) mapping. This study incorporates seven thematic layers for groundwater potential assessment, including geological formations, slope, soil characteristics, land use/land cover (LULC) patterns, Rainfall, drainage density, and lineament density, which were carefully selected and assigned appropriate weights with the help of Fuzzy extent analysis and ratings based on their significance in groundwater occurrence. The results exhibit four different GWPZs in the study area, namely, low (0.02%), moderate (43.98%), High (52.74%), and Excellent (3.26%). Results are validated with the Aquifer mapping report for the Damoh district. Comparison between CGWB class and GWPZ class have 78.22% accuracy and TAI and GWPZ class have 70.77% accuracy. The findings of this study can be used for framing guidelines for effective planning and management of groundwater in the Damoh district.
