Assessing Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 15.3.1 Indicators for Gujarat State of India

In the framework of accomplishing Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), evaluate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 15.3.1 (Life on Land) indicators for Gujarat State, India. Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 15.3.1 is the indicator that claims to combat desertification, restore degraded land, and achieve land degradation neutrality. This research has adopted the methodology recommended by the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) to assess the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) life-on-land goals for Gujarat, India. In this regard, the dedicated open-source tool “Trends.Earth” plug-in in QGIS (Quantum Geographic Information System) software has been used. The chosen study area (Gujarat state, India) is observed from 2001 to 2021 to assess its land degradation indices. The overall Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 15.3.1 indicator (which includes productivity, land cover, and soil carbon) shows 69.55% of land area has improved. The land area that accounts for stability and degradation is 16.31% and 4.14%, respectively (the remaining 10% has no data availability). The sub-indicator of land productivity showed considerable improvement, with 70.57% of the total land area being improved in terms of land productivity. The sub-indicator of land cover shows stable productivity, with 98.38% of the total land area remaining stable. The soil organic carbon sub-indicator also shows stable soil organic carbon, with 98.24% of the total land area remaining unchanged. It was observed that Gujarat state’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) indicators have improved over the said period, which is counterintuitive since climate change, rapid urbanization, and other geological and hydrological factors usually have adverse effects on land degradation. The improvement in Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and integrated NDVI indicators in Gujarat state may point to better water management and good governance policies during the aforementioned interval. However, it cannot be denied that human land use management and global climate shift may have some role in the improved Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 15.3.1 and integrated NDVI indices in a few of the Indian and Asian regions.
