Assessing the Performance of NavIC with the Integration of GPS and Galileo Systems

IRNSS/NavIC, a self-reliant, indigenous regional navigation system is being developed by India. Since the number of NavIC satellites is smaller, there is a need to assess the performance of NavIC with other systems such as Galileo, BeiDou, and GLONASS to fully exploit the best combination in terms of availability and accuracy. So, in this work, the assessment of NavIC is done using GPS and Galileo systems. The data is acquired in static mode at the Hyderabad station from the NovAtel PwrPak7 multi-GNSS receiver to carry out the analysis. The results show that the hybrid NavIC-GPS-Galileo combination gives better accuracy and availability with a significant number of satellites than the other combinations. Furthermore, it is observed that the hybrid NavIC-Galileo outperforms the hybrid NavIC-GPS in terms of satellite visibility, Dilution of Precision (DOP) metrics, and position accuracy measures. The NavIC-Galileo systems are under civilian control, so this combination can be fully explored and utilised in civilian navigation-related applications and services within the region covered by NavIC. This work will be helpful for further investigation of the NavIC performance using single-dual frequency signals of multi-GNSS systems in various dynamic and signal-degraded environments.
