Geospatial Modeling of Soil Erosion in Some Part of Abia State (Isuochi Community)

Soil erosion is an important environmental concern that threatens agricultural production, water quality, and ecological stability in Isuochi, Abia state. Soil erosion has a multidimensional impact, impacting food security through the loss of arable land, increasing sedimentation in water bodies, degrading water quality, and contributing to biodiversity loss. The project aims to do geospatial modelling of soil erosion using the Isuochi village in Abia State’s Umunneochi local government area. Data from SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission), rainfall, and soil maps were collected for the research. Using ArcGIS 10.8, the rate of soil erosion in the research region was assessed using RUSLE modeling with the formula A = R×K×L×S×C×P to determine the rate of soil loss. Areas with a high erosion rate—8.21 t ha^-1 year^-1—indicate those with severe soil erosion. Steep slopes, little plant cover, intense land use patterns like agriculture or deforestation, or soil types prone to erosion are some of the possible characteristics of these locations. Elevated rates of erosion can result in several environmental issues such as sedimentation in water bodies, decreased agricultural production, and deterioration of the soil. Significant soil erosion occurs in places with a high erosion rate of 8.21 t ha^-1 year^-1. Factors like steep slopes, little plant cover, intense land use activities like agriculture or deforestation, or soil types that are prone to erosion might be present in these regions. Elevated rates of erosion may result in deterioration of soil, decreased yield of agricultural products, sedimentation of water bodies, and further ecological issues. Conversely, a low erosion rate of 0.22 t/ha/yr signifies minimal erosion, possibly due to good vegetation cover, effective erosion control, gentle slopes, or less erosion-prone soil types. However, even low erosion rates can accumulate over time and become problematic.
