摘要

Introduction

Disease burden is a widely used concept to compare diseases and conditions with each other. The disease burden is the amount of health loss caused by conditions (including injuries). Since 1997, the RIVM has included disease burden estimates in the Dutch Public Health Foresight study (PHFS), during which the methodology has been further developed. Below is a comprehensive description of the current methodology, and some results from the PHFS-2024 are presented.

Methods

The DALY (disability-adjusted life years) quantifies health loss and is made up of two components: the years of life lost due to premature death and the healthy years lost due to disability.

Results

The total disease burden in the Netherlands is estimated at over 5.3 million lost healthy years of life in 2022. Of this, 36% is due to premature death and 64% due to living with one or more conditions. The ICD chapter ‘Mental and Behavioral Disorders’ (17%) accounts for the largest disease burden, followed by the ICD chapter ‘Neoplasms’ (14%). At the level of individual disorders, bipolar and depressive mood disorders are responsible for the largest disease burden in 2022.

Conclusion

Burden of disease is a good indicator to provide insight into the most important disorders and is therefore a relevant indicator for policy.
