<p>Research in which patients become part of the research team is becoming increasingly common, but has several challenges. Current challenges are involving patients from the very beginning, availability of time and resources, and sufficient knowledge about and experience with participatory research among researchers. We share four key points from our own experiences with participatory research with patients that can contribute to successful participation and further development of participatory research. These key points are relation, roles, right conditions and reflection. Also, we discuss the challenge of this type of research, to determine the added value of the participation of co-researchers.</p>
