Onze individuele bril afzetten
摘要
People are essentially social beings, and social factors determine our health and well-being substantially. However our system is thoroughly individual-oriented, offering individual care and support and individual prevention interventions. Social determinants of health are easily forgotten by researchers, policy makers and professionals. A recent study shows that Dutch health policy tends to linger on the same: changing individual behaviour. This is remarkable, because the literature does show that social networks have comparable or even greater effects on mortality than individual lifestyle factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption or vaccination. Apparently people tend to underestimate the effects of social relations as compared to individual lifestyle behaviour. This underestimation hinders a clear view on which factors really influence health and hinders effective health policy. The challenge is to be aware of our ‘individual glasses’ and to incorporate all knowledge about health, including knowledge about social determinants, into policy. Some innovative Dutch interventions show how to use the power of social communities for better health for all.
