<p>Transit network design focuses on meeting demand and ensuring seamless operations, by efficiently allocating available resources, for maximizing passenger and operator welfare. Transit networks are exposed to different sources of vulnerability, which affect operations and have been neglected so far in the context of the associated transit network design problem. In this study, a methodology towards incorporating vulnerability in transit route design is proposed, which considers critical network links based on passenger flows and the impact of a potential disruption on the network. The methodology is tested on Mandl’s network and two variants of Mumford’s network and the results are assessed and compared with respect to their topology, passenger and operator costs.</p>
