<p>The term per- und polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) includes a wide variety of substances. Several PFAS are persistent and tend to bioaccumulation in organisms. For some PFAS as perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) effects on human health are discussed. Open applications of PFAS as e.g. PFOS in firefighting foams led to environmental pollution. The aim of the study was to determine whether former PFAS release to the environment affected the plasma levels of residents. For this purpose, four regions with known environmental PFAS pollution and four nearby regions (control regions) without known PFAS pollution in Bavaria were selected. Per each region, 160 human plasma samples were analyzed for nine PFAS among PFOS, PFOA and its substitute ammonium 4,8-dioxa-3&#xa0;H-perfluorononanoate (ADONA). In almost all plasma samples, PFOS (99.5%) and PFOA (98.8%) were determined. Median levels for the different regions ranged between 1.0 and 1.4&#xa0;µg/L for PFOS and between 0.7 and 0.8&#xa0;µg/L for PFOA. PFAS levels in the blood samples were comparable in regions with previous PFAS inputs and in control regions. However, there were differences in the results with regard to age and gender of the people surveyed. In comparison with other studies, PFAS load was low. For the majority (&gt; 96%) of samples PFOS and PFOA levels remained below the human biomonitoring (HBM) value I of 5&#xa0;µg/L and 2&#xa0;µg/L, respectively.</p>
