South Africa is one of the EU’s most important partners in Africa. However, the Covid-19 pandemic, the Russian war of aggression on Ukraine and the Gaza war have exposed differences in their foreign policy positions. Since June 2024, South Africa has been led by its first coalition government, which has undertaken foreign policy adjustments. Despite the fact that the EU and South Africa do not always agree on foreign policy issues, South Africa’s active commitment to multiple alliances expands the scope for European-South African cooperation.
