Despite the ongoing civil war that has been raging in Syria since 2011, Bashar Al-Asad has been president for the past 24 years. He inherited this position from his father, Hafez Al-Asad, along with the repressive instruments of governance that continue to keep him in power. This analysis explains how these instruments were developed and how they function.
