Ypresian Dinoflagellate Cyst Biostratigraphy and Paleoenvironments of the Aridal Formation from the Sebkha El Farma Section, Boujdour Basin (Saharan Domain, Morocco)

In the Saharan domain, the Meso-Cenozoic basins formed a large gulf representing the remains of a trans-Saharan epicontinental sea where sediments rich in organic matter were mainly deposited. In contrast to the Tarfaya Basin, bituminous sediments of Eocene age were accumulated exclusively around Boujdour, west of the Oued Ed-Dahab phosphate deposit (Upper Cretaceous-Paleogene). Here, we apply palynological methods to study these sediments and to reconstruct their depositional environments. The recovered palynomorphs are dominated by dinoflagellate cysts (83.48% − 97.51%), while the co-occurrence of dinocyst species indicates a Ypresian age that correlates with the nannofossil biozones NP10-NP13. The reconstructed paleoenvironment dominantly corresponds to an estuarine lagoon with periodic influences of marine transgression in the Early-Middle Ypresian. Under such transgressive regime, this lagoon seems to offer the necessary conditions for the development of indigenous cysts of marginal ecological nature, oscillating between an inner and outer neritic environment. This site, contemporaneous with the Boucraa Formation, reveals through its faunal richness and vestiges of primary phosphatogenesis the inception of a phosphate series more fully developed to the east of the region. It therefore meets the criteria of geosite, with distinct geological, geomorphological, and environmental features that give it clear scientific, educational, as well as potential for geotourism.
