Assessment of Geomorphosite for Geotourism Development using Geosite Assessment Model (GAM)- A Case Study of Gangani, Paschim Medinipur, Eastern India

Geomorphosites are geomorphological landforms that have a scientific, cultural, aesthetic and socio-economic value due to human perceptions. Geotourism is a unique form of tourism that highlights geological features. Gangani, also known as the “Grand Canyon of Bengal,” is a popular tourist spot in West Bengal, India, a Pleistocene lateritic upland with stunning ravines, Sal forests, and cashew trees. This study uses the Geosite Assessment Model (GAM) consisting of main values: scientific/educational, scenic/aesthetic, and protection values and additional values which includes functional and touristic values. The method has 27 sub-indicators rated on a scale of 0.00 to 1.00 points.Based on this model Gangani’s geomorphosites have a remarkably high score. For example, GS5 scored 8.75 out of 12 in Main Value and 10.25 out of 15 in Additional Value, while GS3 recorded the highest AV score of 12.00. Out of the 7 geomorphosites, most of the evaluated sites fall under the highest zones (Z33 and Z32), indicating their very high geotourism potential. This highlights a great opportunity for tourism development, but it must be sustainable, as the sites sculpted by nature at Gangani over centuries, are fragile and must not be degraded by anthropogenic interference or short-term neglect.
