Analytic Hierarchy Process as a qualitative-quantitative Evaluation Method for Assessing the Degradation of Clay Minerals Sculptures at the Universidade Federal De Santa Maria, Southern Brazil

This study presents a methodological proposal that combines qualitative and quantitative approaches to assess the deterioration of ex-situ geoheritage in sculptures made from clay minerals using the terracotta technique. These sculptures are located on the campus of the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (UFSM) in southern Brazil. The assessment involved two phases: a qualitative analysis of degradation processes, based on the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) glossary, and a quantitative evaluation in which the significance of these processes was ranked using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). Eight terracotta statues were evaluated, resulting in two key outcomes. The first is a morphological illustration of the observed deterioration processes, supported by a mosaic of images depicting each sculpture. The second provides a spatial analysis of the deterioration through cartographic products that map the processed data. The analysis revealed biological colonization as the predominant form of deterioration, with notable differences depending on the proximity of the sculptures. Sculptures in less accessible areas exhibited lower overall deterioration, while those in exposed positions showed greater material loss. The proposed approach, combining qualitative analysis with AHP, proved effective in assessing weathering processes that contribute to the deterioration of geosculptures, offering a cost-effective and efficient methodology.
