Preliminary Inventory and Assessment of the Geological Heritage of the Origin of Chinese Lingbi Stone

The Xu–Su (Xuzhou–Suzhou) area is a mosaic and touristic-attractive part of East-Central China. The Mesoproterozoic, Neoproterozoic, and early Paleozoic hills, the geomorphically interesting NNE-SSW-oriented extension of the area, and the celebrated miniature landform—decorative Lingbi Stone—have been sculptured by past dynamic processes, starting with the Precambrian, Palaeozoic, and Mesozoic tectonics, ocean‒land transitions, and postglacial riverine network formation. The complex geological and palaeogeographical history generated a wide variety of geoheritage types, forms, and landscapes. Rich fossils sealed in ancient, well-stratified successions of specific lithologies with well-known Neoproterozoic stromatolite reefs, as well as widespread molar-tooth structure (MTSs) in Precambrian strata, provide evidence of past natural settings with flourishing life forms. The vast geodiversity of the area highlights its scientific value, as well as its national and international tourism significance, adding to the already abundant historical architectural sites of this area. Most of these geomorphologically and geologically valuable places have been destroyed or are increasingly threatened by natural factors such as weathering but also by human factors, such as deforestation, mining activities and construction projects, causing geoheritage loss, which raises a number of ethical issues. The survey, mapping, and promotion of unique geosites is incidental to their registration in natural heritage programmes with the implementation of appropriate geoconservation strategies in balance with land-use management. This paper outlines the scientific, educational, and touristic potential of national geoheritage within the framework of Chinese geoconservation initiatives and calls for the application of both Confucian environmental ethics and geoethical values to the current mining industry.
