Integrating GIS-Based Geomorphological Attributes and Collaborative Cartography for Waterfall Inventory in Southern Brazil

Waterfalls are hydrogeomorphological features formed by the combination of geodiversity elements, mainly by rocks, landforms and water. They are also a geoheritage with an intrinsically relevant value that demands actions for geoconservation. Included among these actions are inventory as well as geotouristic promotion and use. The aim of this research was to identify and analyze waterfalls in the municipalities of Pelotas and Arroio do Padre (in the southern region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil) and to determine which areas have the potential to present the geodiversity elements mentioned as well as to integrate this information with the knowledge of the local population by using collaborative cartography as an additional tool. The methodology involved the integration of two sets of procedures: a) geoprocessing techniques that enabled the geospatial analysis of the geomorphological variables (slopes, lineament densities, roughness and landforms diversity) and the development of a synthesis map indicating the potential locations for the occurrence of waterfalls; and b) collaborative cartography allowing the inclusion of popular knowledge and the experience of local individuals and communities in the process of developing an inventory. The methodological integration led to the inventory of 17 waterfalls, 13 of which are in areas with a high potential for their occurrence. This condition demonstrates the potential of the methodology used and can be replicated in spatial delimitations with similar environmental conditions, hence expanding the possibilities of using waterfalls for recreation and geotourism in this area of the Brazilian territory.
