<p>With the establishment of secondary education in Portugal, the Geological Commissions and the Portuguese Geological Survey played a crucial role in supplying secondary schools with geological collections comprising specimens of fossils, minerals and rocks from Portuguese territory. These didactic collections facilitated the development of practical and laboratory activities throughout the successive curricular reforms of the Portuguese secondary education, while also enabling students to engage with the geodiversity of Portugal. The Dr Joaquim de Carvalho Secondary School (Figueira da Foz, west central Portugal) was established in 1932. Among its scientific and educational resources stands out a palaeontological collection sourced from the Geological Survey&#xa0;of Portugal, and probably&#xa0;offered in the 1930s. This collection presently encompasses 143 inventory entries, predominantly comprising marine invertebrates spanning the three Phanerozoic Eras. Most specimens were gathered between the 1880s and 1900s, many of them collected from historical Portuguese outcrops that are now depleted or inaccessible. In addition, part of the original labelling remains intact. This and other analogous didactic collections hold considerable scientific and historiographical significance, offering crucial insights into the evolution of natural sciences education outside of universities. Their significance as ex situ elements of geoheritage highlights the need of geoconservation measures that include their inventorying, protection and valuing.</p>
