Touch in Human Social Robot Interaction: Systematic Literature Review with PRISMA Method

In the past two decades, the deployment of social robots has expanded across various industries, including service, education, and healthcare. Robots in order to be trusted, need to provide positive experiences through smooth and engaging interactions across various communication channels such as speech and gaze. Among these, touch plays a crucial yet underexplored role in human-robot interaction (HRI). This systematic literature review, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), identifies 42 articles from 2001 to 2023 that focus on haptic technologies and touch in social robots. The review highlights key differences in technologies, links between touch and human emotion, and types of touch interactions. It also identifies research gaps and outlines future directions, serving as a guide for HRI touch studies and haptic system development. Studies with more diverse sample, real life applications and combination of robot touch with other abilities and characteristics such as appearance and gaze behaviour will give more thorough insights on how to leverage advanced touch technologies such as sensors and smart materials for social good and we will be in a position to more easily generalized the study results.
