Wilt of Sugarcane: A Lack of Clarity on its Diagnosis and Failure to Recognize its Impact in India
摘要
Wilt of sugarcane is a fungal disease caused by Fusarium sacchari. The disease has been causing damage to sugarcane cultivation in India for over a century, resulting in historical crop failures. Unlike red rot, wilt in sugarcane is not a regular feature, as its occurrence is influenced by various abiotic factors that affect disease manifestation and severity. Although the disease occurs in large areas, as observed now in subtropical India, the industry tries to paint the issue as yellows, root borer or mealybug damage, and yellow leaf disease. Reasons for misconceptions include a lack of application of scientific principles in crop cultivation and issues affecting the crop. The industry must update on the critical issues affecting cane growth and productivity, especially wilt, systemic vascular disease, and its association with twisted top (pokkah boeng), another Fusarium disease. The review focuses on the critical areas the industry should educate itself on the looming crisis of wilt to address the issue, which seriously affects the crop.
