<p>Pets are popular and kept all over the world. In addition to their many positive psychosocial and physical effects, there are—apart from possible allergic reactions—also numerous diseases that can be transmitted from pets and livestock to their owners, negatively affecting human health. These so-called zoonotic diseases are infectious diseases transmitted from animals to humans. The causative agents include bacteria, parasites, fungi, and viruses. Transmission of zoonotic pathogens can occur anywhere humans come into contact with animals, animal products, or consume such products. This may happen in connection with domesticated animals, trade, hunting, or research. Zoonoses can also be relevant as occupational diseases in livestock farming.</p><p>Due to the close relationship between humans and animals, zoonoses represent a&#xa0;significant global public health issue. This article discusses several of the more common skin-related zoonoses that can be caused by pets.</p>
