Thromboembolic events can severely impair the quality of life of patients and in the worst case scenario can be fatal. The aim is to minimize the risk of such events as far as possible. It is important for the routine practice to assess the thromboembolic risk in relation to the patient’s current situation. Surgical interventions, disease-related reduction in mobility as well as tumor diseases and, above all, personal anamnesis are the cornerstones in the indications for a prophylaxis of thromboembolic diseases.
