Hand dermatitis in all its clinical variations is an inflammatory skin disease and one of the most frequent occupation-related diseases. It significantly affects many occupational and social areas due to the impairment of the ability to work and with sometimes substantial financial consequences and costs. Adequate medical management enables successful treatment and prevents long-term treatment, poor patient compliance and adverse treatment effects. New knowledge also of the pathophysiology has recently led to a clinical classification system in the current guidelines into four etiological and four morphological subtypes, which should be the foundation of an effective treatment planning. The diagnostic procedure is presented as a workflow and the treatment options including the limitations are elucidated.
