<p>Due to demographic developments, the number of cancer cases is expected to rise dramatically in the coming years and decades—worldwide and particularly also in Germany. Epidemiologic research has identified various risk factors, the avoidance or reduction of which can prevent at least 40% of cancers. Farsighted epidemiological cancer research addressing the urgent need for effective prevention strategies and employing the latest technologies will be of paramount importance in the fight against cancer in the 21st century.</p>
