摘要

Cancer is a common chronic disease in Germany, and the number of cases is increasing as society ages. Some of the cancer cases are caused by modifiable risk factors. However, the proportion of cancer cases caused by certain risk factors depends on the location of the cancer. It is estimated that around 18% of all cancer cases in Germany are caused by excessive body weight (overweight and obesity) and an unfavorable diet. Among the nutritional factors, alcoholic beverages, red and processed meat, salt and glycemic load are considered risk factors for at least some cancer sites, while fruit, vegetables, fibre, coffee and in some cases milk and dairy products are considered protective factors. Even though dietary factors do not come close to the preventive potential of non-smoking, they can considerably reduce the risk of tumor development.
