Magnetostratigraphic and mineral magnetic characteristics of the Middle Eocene Climatic Optimum (MECO) from the equatorial pericratonic basin of Kutch in Panandhro mine, Gujarat, India

The lignite mines of Western India preserve some of the high-resolution records of tropical hyperthermal events having a significant bearing on understanding the effects of global warming on terrestrial ecosystems over these latitudes. The present locality has been reported for significant mammalian and vertebrate fossils, as the earliest examples of their respective fauna in Asia. The palaeomagnetic results presented here are correlated with the existing biostratigraphy to refine the chronological framework. We also report the rock magnetic signatures across the hyperthermal event in this lagoonal to middle shelf transgressive system. Magnetostratigraphy records two normal magnetozones, separated by a reversal correlated with the GPTS pattern corresponding to C19n-C18r-C18n. Except for the lowest ~ 4 m, which belongs to the latest Lutetian, this correlation places the Harudi Formation and basal Fulra limestone into the Bartonian Stage. The section is sub-divided into four zones (Zone 1–Zone 4) based on detailed mineral magnetic variations indicating a change in depositional environment conditions from shallow to deep waters and a shift from relatively cooler to warm-wet climatic phases. Zone 3, within the green shale falling in Chron C18n at its top, is where the study's peak warmth is found. This finding suggests that the Panandhro sequence contains the warming interval coinciding with the timing of MECO. This study indicates that this pericratonic equatorial ocean basin responded to the warming by deepening/transgression due to relative sea level rise. However, the effect of subsidence cannot be ruled out.
